The term “hosting” does not describe a single service, but a set of services that provide a variety of functions to a domain address. Having a website and e-mails, as an example, are two independent services though in the general case they come together, so most of the people consider them as one single service. The truth is, each and every domain has a couple of DNS records called A and MX, which show the server that manages each specific service - the first one is a numeric IP address, that identifies where the website for the domain name is loaded from, while the latter is an alphanumeric string, which shows the server that deals with the emails for the domain name. For example, an A record can be 123.123.123.123 and an MX record would be mx1.domain.com. Every time you open a site or send an e-mail, the global DNS servers are contacted to check the name servers that a Internet domain has and the traffic/message is first directed to that company. When you have custom records on their end, the browser request or the e-mail will then be directed to the correct server. The idea behind employing separate records is that the two services work with different web protocols and you may have your site hosted by one service provider and the e-mails by another.

Custom MX and A Records in Shared Hosting

If you have a shared hosting account from our company and you would like to point either your website or your emails to an alternative service provider, it'll take you literally just 2 clicks to do this. Our Hepsia CP comes with an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domains and subdomains will be listed alphabetically and you will be able to see and edit the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you choose to use a different email provider and they ask you to set up more MX records than the default 2, it will not take more than a few clicks either to add them. Also you can set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the bigger the priority a certain MX record will have. The propagation of every record that you change or set up won't take more than a few hours and if necessary, you will also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, that shows how long a record will stay active after it is changed or deleted.

Custom MX and A Records in Semi-dedicated Hosting

Accessing and editing the A or MX records for each of your domain addresses or subdomains is really easy if you acquire a semi-dedicated server plan from us. The accounts are handled using our in-house built Hepsia Control Panel, which includes a section dedicated to the DNS records of your domain names. The latter will be listed alphabetically and you may click on each of them to see both the A and the MX records. Editing any record will be as easy as typing in the new one in a text box and saving the change, so even if you have never dealt with such matters before, you simply won't encounter any problems if you choose to switch your website or e-mails to a different provider while keeping the second service with our company. If needed, you may also create additional MX records and set a certain priority based on the recommendations of the new provider.
