An SRV record is a DNS record, that is used to forward a domain to a third-party server and use it for a service different from an Internet site. This may be a Voice-Over-IP server, a video streaming service, an instant messaging system, etc. When an SRV record is created, you are able to specify an Internet Protocol that the domain address will use and the port, which is to be used to connect to the remote server. Moreover, provided that you have a few SRV records for the very same service, you can set various priorities and weights for every one of them, in order to spread the load between a number of machines. Such a record will permit you to use the same domain or subdomains under it with different providers, so you can use it for many purposes even if you can't get all the services from just one service provider.

SRV Records in Shared Hosting

If you host a domain name within a shared hosting account from our company and we manage the DNS records for it, you'll be able to set up a new SRV record with only a few mouse clicks inside the DNS Records part of your Hepsia Control Panel. Our intuitive interface makes it much easier to set up a new record compared with other website hosting Control Panels, so if you want an SRV record, you will only have to fill a few boxes and you'll be all set. This includes the protocol as well as the port number, the value i.e. the actual record, the priority and the weight. For the last two you may set any value between 1 and 100 depending on which server you want clients to access first or what recommendations the other provider has given you. As an added option, you can select how long this record will be active after you change it or delete it - the so-called Time To Live time, that’s measured in seconds. If not required otherwise, you could leave the default value there.

SRV Records in Semi-dedicated Hosting

Because we understand how frustrating it may be to manage DNS records, we will give you an easy-to-use DNS administration instrument as an element of our custom Hepsia CP, so when you host your domain addresses in a semi-dedicated server account from us, you'll be able to set up an SRV record without any difficulties. We also have a step-by-step guide, which will make things that much easier. Using an intuitive interface, you'll have to type in the information that the other company has provided you with - protocol, port number and service. Unless they've given you specific recommendations to change the priority and the weight values, you can leave those two options as they are and your new record will go live within a few minutes. The Time To Live option (TTL) may also be set to a custom value, but normally the standard value of 3600 seconds is used for most records. This value indicates the time the record will continue existing after it is changed or deleted.
